| dc.description.abstract | Apesar do Egipto antigo ter em tempos sido descrito como «a civilização sem cidades», sobretudo com base em argumentos filológicos, a arqueologia tornou evidente que houve assentamentos humanos que atingiram o estatuto de cidades e que não estamos de todo perante uma sociedade sub-urbanizada. Antes pelo contrário, o antigo Egipto foi uma sociedade urbanizada desde o início do Império Antigo ou talvez mesmo desde o Período Dinástico Inicial. Nesta intervenção, trataremos o conceito e a evolução da noção de «cidade» ao longo da história egípcia e procuraremos sintetizar a principal tipologia operatória com que hoje se trabalha no seio da Egiptologia científica. Paralelamente caracterizaremos as três grandes cidades planificadas de Kahun (Império Médio), Amarna e Deir el-Medina (ambas do Império Novo). Indissociável do movimento urbanístico egípcio, a problemática da construção merece igualmente a nossa atenção, designadamente com uma referência aos principais materiais utilizados e às principais fontes hoje disponíveis para o estudo e reconstituição das habitações do antigo Egipto. Por fim, passamos em revista, com figurações artísticas egípcias, um conjunto de actividades e ofícios que poderíamos caracterizar como «urbanos» ou que ganham maior expressão quando associados à vida numa cidade. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | Even though the ancient Egypt has once be end scribed as «civilization without cities», primarily based on philological arguments, archeology made clear that there were human settlements that have reached the status of towns and we are not at all before a sub-urbanized society. Instead, ancient Egypt was a society urbanized since the beginning of the Old Kingdom or perhaps even from the Pre-dynastic Period. In this paper, we work upon the concept of «town» and its evolution throughout the Egyptian history an dtry to summarize the main operative typology with which it is now work within the scientific Egyptology. At the same time, we characterize the three major planned cities of Kahun (Middle Kingdom), Amarna and Deir el-Medina (both from the New Kingdom). Inseparable from the Egyptian urban movement, the issue of construction also deserves our attention, specially a reference to the main materials used and the main sources available today for the study and reconstruction of dwellings of the ancient Egypt. Finally, we review a set of activities and crafts we might characterize as «urban» or that earn higher expression when associated with livingin a town. | pt_PT |
