This study set out to establish whether the social, demographic and specific characteristics of unemployment bring about major alterations to the quality of life of individuals. To be precise, it sought to achieve two specific objectives: I) To identify the socio-demographic characteristics (sex, age, level of schooling, type of family unit, religiousness, existence of children, number of children, type of housing) which bring about alterations to the quality of life of the unemployed in terms of emotional resources, satisfaction with life and stress levels; II) To identify whether the specific characteristics of unemployment such as the type of unemployment, duration of unemployment, duration of last professional activity, the reasons behind unemployment, means of subsistence and alterations to life deriving from unemployment, produce alterations to the quality of life of the unemployed in terms of emotional resources, satisfaction with life and stress levels. To achieve these objectives, we subjected one hundred unemployed people to a questionnaire and analysed the results in line with a Biopsychosocial and Multifactorial Health Model which studies the implications of given major events in life in integrated fashion, bearing in mind environmental and individual/personal factors and transactional processes. The results obtained in our study would suggest the relevance of the social and demographic characteristics of the unemployed for their quality of life in terms of emotional resources, satisfaction with life and stress levels, though only the variables āschooling", ātype of housing", ātype of family/who do you live with" and ānumber of children" proved statistically significant. Furthermore, some specific characteristics of unemployment bring about alterations to the quality of life of the unemployed in terms of emotional resources, satisfaction with life and stress levels, to wit the duration of unemployment, the duration of the last professional activity and the type of unemployment
