Dois molares superiores da Pedreira das Salemas (Würm recente), sugeriam, pelo pequeno tamanho, E. hydruntinus, única
espécie de pequeno equídeo seguramente presente no Plistocénico superior da Europa Ocidental, ainda não identificada no território português.
O seu estudo veio confirmar a atribuição, precisando aquela espécie à sub-espécie E. h. davidi, caracterizada pelo alongamento relativo
do protocone, face à subespécie-tipo, E. h. hydruntinus. Nos domínios mais meridionais da Europa mediterrânica, persistiu E. h. hydruntinus no
decurso do Würm recente, então substituída, nas áreas mais setentrionais, por E. h. davidi.
Two small second upper molars found at Pedreira das Salemas (Loures, Lisboa) (Upper Würm) suggested the occurrence of Equus hydruntinus, the only small equid surely known from the Upper Pleistocene of Europe. The study allowed us to report these teeth to Equus hydruntinus davidi. This subspecies differ from E. h. hydruntinus by the greater relative length of the protocone in the upper cheeck teeth. E. h. davidi replaced E. h. hydruntinus during the late Würm on the regions close to the alpine arch, but not on more southern areas, around the Mediterranean sea, where E. h. hydruntinus survived.
