The importance of new information technology, particularly for the domains of work, leisure and access to information and knowledge has become a fact of life. The general meaning of technology includes technical, cultural, social and organizational aspects, and, since people in general are among the factors that improve social innovation and technological purposes, the existence of a large number of citizens familiarized and skilled with digital technologies is of most importance not only for the consolidation of technological daily practices but also to nourish a cultural environment that expands markets, knowledge and technological artifacts. This poster presents the preliminary results of ongoing research that aims to understand diversity in online courses mainly in regard to how people look for and use online courses to meet their different needs. In particular it aims to uncover new potentials and contributions of information technologies that can trigger individual change to meet the challenges of contemporary societies. It presents a case study of a 54 year old retired woman enrolled in the first year of one of the new undergraduate programs offered by Universidade Aberta, Portugal whose pedagogical model relies integrally on online courses. The data are explored by focusing on the interconnections among three different axes: digital culture and new opportunities; new publics and their intellectual needs; and the relationship with knowledge that implies a new attitude towards learning.pt_PT
