Abstract(s)
XX.
This master thesis is based on a research conducted about the form and content of the collection of records of saints gathered by D. Gabriel de Sousa (1912-1997) that currently belongs to a private collector. From the vast collection of records of about five hundred saints in parchment and paper we focused our study on eighty-one records that served as a basis to the making of an exhibition and a series of conferences in which the records of saints were approached formally (in their printed format and in tile panels), from an ethnographic, social (processions and other religious festivities) and commercial viewpoints (major printing houses and records trading). All these aspects are present in the collection of D. Gabriel de Sousa and are exposed along this work. Rather than drawing over the sense of opportunity and correctness of the way the collection is compiled, our purpose is to observe it as a set that was gathered over a period of time and whose organization demonstrates an understanding by its creator that exceeds simple curiosity. D. Gabriel de Sousa split the collection into two distinct areas, organizing them by themes, authorship and invocations: artistic records and popular records, both annotated. Our study aims to present a collection that may have been initiated for enjoyment that reveals in a parallel reading the effort D. Gabriel de Sousa put in organizing it and whose interpretation may help us better understand Portuguese art colleting, in the private sphere of the first half of the twentieth century.
