| dc.description.abstract | This study aimed to examine the integration of Physical Education in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education, through a comparative analysis of mainland Portugal and the Autonomous Region of the Azores. The research focused particularly on the perceptions of Primary School Teachers, Physical Education Teachers, and Parents, seeking to understand not only the formal curricular framework of the subject, but also how it is implemented in practice and valued by different educational stakeholders. Methodologically, the study was based on data collected from these groups, allowing for a comparative analysis of the two contexts. The findings reveal a broad consensus regarding the importance of Physical Education in promoting children’s holistic development, including motor, cognitive, social, and emotional competencies, as well as healthy lifestyle habits. However, the results also highlight a significant gap between the recognized importance of the subject and its actual status in school settings. In mainland Portugal, several structural constraints persist, including the generalist teaching model, insufficient teacher training, and limited instructional time. In contrast, in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, the involvement of specialized teachers appears to support a more consistent and valued implementation of Physical Education. It is concluded that the integration of Physical Education in primary education depends not only on curricular guidelines but also on organizational conditions and educational policy choices. The study emphasizes the need to strengthen teacher training, enhance institutional recognition, and ensure adequate conditions for the effective implementation of the subject. | eng |
