Abstract(s)
In the contemporary world, globalization and human mobility are indisputable realities. Individuals, cultures, and worldviews transcend national borders, transforming lifestyles and forging new connections across diverse geographical regions. Another salient contemporary reality concerns the aging population and the pressing concerns surrounding elderly care. Within the context of migration, these issues assume a heightened dimension. The phenomenon of an ageing population is causing concern among family members, society, government and political institutions. This study seeks to understand how family members of the elderly manage their daily lives and care at a distance. To this end, an inductive qualitative approach was adopted. From an intersectional perspective of gender relations, we sought to understand the care practices, difficulties and (dis)equalities that permeate these relationships in the family context of the interviewees. The research shows that the intersectionality of gender relations in the context of distance care presents complexities and challenges for family members, considering the cultural, economic, social and emotional dimensions involved. In addition, it is noteworthy that distance care is often attributed to women, reflecting traditional cultural norms, as well as feelings of moral and filial duty. Also, feelings of guilt, powerlessness and sadness. The study reveals the importance of networked media in bringing families closer together and sharing care at a distance. The research has allowed us to assess the complexity of transnational care and to open reflections for future studies and point the way to new approaches.
