Num tempo fortemente controlado pela censura inquisitorial e policial, e sem nenhum passado que o justificasse, o padre Francisco Manuel do Nascimento construiu, a partir do terceiro quartel do século XVIII, um discurso político fortemente ideológico e empenhado; alimentado pelos autores que inspiraram a Revolução Francesa e pela sua própria experiência, o poeta, fugido à Inquisição e exilado em Paris por longos anos, emitiu nos seus poemas e notas uma forma de intervenção política em Portugal inteiramente nova e aguerrida, antecipando um novo viés que a literatura em tempos do liberalismo viria a consagrar. Expor esta característica da obra filintista é o objetivo deste artigo, que pretende igualmente demonstrar a inteireza de um discurso político-ideológico consciente por parte do poeta.
In a time strongly controlled by in-quisitorial and police censorship, and with no past to justify it, Father Francisco Manuel do Nascimento built, from the third quarter of the 18th century, a strongly ideological and committed political discourse; nourished by the authors who inspired the French Revolution and by his own experience, the poet, escaped from the Inquisition and exiled in Paris for many years, issued in his poems and notes an entirely new and fierce form of political intervention in Portugal, anticipating a new bias that literature in times of liberalism would come to consecrate. The aim of this article is to expose this characteristic of the philanthropicwork, which also aims to demonstrate thepoet’s whole-ideological-political discourse.
