| dc.description.abstract | Nascido em Lisboa (ca. 1611), sexto filho do Vice-Rei do Brasil, D. Jorge Mascarenhas, na sequência da afirmação da Restauração do Reino Português, em fevereiro de 1641, D. Jerónimo fugiu para Madrid. No respeito da justiça divina e do necessário direito de abandonar a pátria quando esta se mostrasse demasiado «angosta e madrasta», manteve-se sempre um intransigente defensor da devida lealdade ao soberano espanhol Filipe IV. Foi por ele recompensado com honrosos títulos eclesiásticos e prestigiadas posições na corte. Na capital espanhola, também desempenhou funções diretivas na vida espiritual de algumas congregações leigo-religiosas. Em castelhano, para além de publicar diversas obras, dedicou-se também ao trabalho de erudita coletânea e transcrição duma enorme documentação histórico-política, genealógica e hagiográfica, tanto impressa quanto manuscrita (1598-1666), reunida em nada menos que cinquenta e um extensos volumes. | dc.description.abstract | Born in Lisbon (c. 1611), the sixth son of the Viceroy of Brazil, D. Jorge Mascarenhas, D. Jerónimo fled to Madrid in February 1641, following the consolidation of the Restoration of the Portuguese Kingdom. In accordance with his understanding of divine justice and of the legitimate right to abandon one’s homeland when it proved excessively harsh, he remained throughout his life an uncompromising defend-er of the loyalty owed to the Spanish sovereign, Philip IV of Spain. For this, he was rewarded with honourable ecclesiastical titles and pres-tigious positions at court. In the Spanish capi-tal, he also held leading roles in the spiritual life of several lay-religious congregations. Writ-ing in Castilian, in addition to publishing vari-ous works, he devoted himself to the learned task of compiling and transcribing a vast body of historical-political, genealogical, and hag-iographical documentation, both printed and manuscript (1598–1666), gathered in no fewer than fifty-one extensive volumes. He died as Bishop of Segovia in 1672. | eng |
