- Perceptions of populations and technicians in waste management in Nampula, MozambiquePublication . Tocoloa, Alexandre; Martinho, Ana Paula; Fernandes, Ana PaulaUrban solid waste management systems (MSW) in developing countries are characterized by inadequate service delivery, low waste recovery, operational inefficiencies and inadequate waste disposal. The presence of urban solid waste poses a threat to public health and the environment if not managed properly. In Nampula city, in Mozambique, peri-urban popula-tions live near open dumps with open burning. The present study aims to analyze the implica-tions and perceptions about the effects on health and on the environment of these populations that lives close to MSW dumps in the city of Nampula. A mixed survey was used with data col-lection instruments: an epidemiological questionnaire and interview guides. The common ques-tions of these two tolls were analyzed and compare the perception of the population with the perception of health and environmental technicians of the municipality of Nampula.

- Improving social engineering resilience in enterprisesPublication . Ribeiro, Ricardo; Mateus-Coelho, Nuno; São Mamede, HenriqueSocial Engineering pose a significant problem for enterprises. Cybercriminals continue developing new and sophisticated methods to trick individuals into disclosing confidential information or granting unauthorized access to infrastructure systems. These attacks remain a significant threat to enterprise systems despite significant investments in technical architecture and security measures. User awareness training and other behavioral interventions are critical for improving Social Engineering resilience. Training and education programs for users are crucial in reducing the probability of these attacks. Compliance with security policies and procedures is significantly improved through education-based training. A security culture involving all stakeholders is also essential, as open, and honest communication from management can increase user awareness of potential threats. Emotional biases such as fear, trust, and curiosity also impact susceptibility to attacks, but personal traits that make individuals vulnerable require further investigation. This paper aims to research and identify effective interventions that improve SE resilience, addressing objectives such as examining the literature on behavioral, technical, and organizational by performing an SLR of factors that contribute to SE attacks in enterprises and their impact on cyber security and semi-structured interviews to give voice to employees on several vital roles, leveraging this way a theoretical and practical understanding on the difficulties and solutions enterprises face constantly. Furthermore, the objective is also to investigate the effectiveness of different enterprise interventions to improve SE resilience, including user awareness training, technical controls (filtering and monitoring), and organizational strategies (security culture interventions), and to identify factors that increase or prevent the success of these interventions and how they interact with each other to improve SE resilience. Therefore, it aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of the state of knowledge in this field and propose a framework by identifying best practices for improving Social Engineering resilience in organizations while supporting the development of new research studies to address this subject. Its goal is to help enterprises of any size leverage this framework to reduce the risk of successful Social Engineering attacks and improve their culture of security awareness.

- COVID-19 infection and risk analysis: a short introductionPublication . Teodoro, M. Filomena; Oliveira, Teresa; Taero, ÉlioThis work is part of a study about COVID-19 pandemic in Mozambique. Here we reproduce the first part of such study where a general introduction about the background and motivational aspects of COVID-19 in the world is made. Also, the relevance of mathematical and statistical modeling, the concepts of risk, risk analysis and spatial epidemiology are detailed. An introductory briefing on risk measures in epidemiology is performed. In the present work, we deal with risk assessment in epidemiology, we address aspects such as uncertainty and variability, types of risk assessment and its steps, methods, and relevant conditions for the quality of risk assessment. At the moment, the considered data set is still incomplete, only preliminary estimated models and preliminary results were obtained. A continuation of this manuscript will illustrate the models estimated and applied to the modeling of infectious diseases, presenting those with a mathematical and statistical approach to COVID-19 infection. Also, we will present the mapping of diseases. The preliminary results obtained with the provisional data set agree with similar performed studies.
- A new R-function to estimate the PDF of the product of two uncorrelated normal variablesPublication . Seijas-Macias, J. Antonio; Oliveira, Amilcar; Oliveira, TeresaThis paper analyses the implementation of a procedure using the software R to calculate the Probability Density Function (PDF) of the product of two uncorrelated Normally Distributed Random Variables. The problem of estimating the distribution of the product of two random variables has been solved for some particular cases, but there is no unique expression for all possible situations. In our study, we chose Rohatgi’s theorem as a basis for approximating the product of two uncorrelated Normally Distributed Random Variables. The numerical approximation of the product PDF was calculated using a function that we implemented in R. Several numerical examples show that the approximations obtained in R fit the theoretical values of the product distributions. The results obtained with our R function are very positive when we compare them with the Monte Carlo Simulation of the product of the two variables.
