Cardoso, João Luís; Cardoso, Guilherme; Batalha, Luísa; André, Maria da ConceiçãoThe archaeological remains attributable to the Iron Age, the Republican and the Imperial Roman periods, collected in the excavations carried out in the Historic Center of Oeiras between 2000 and 2007, in the place where in 1903 a Roman mosaic attributed to the 3rd/4th century AD was identified are studied. The remains, including amphorae, common productions and fine productions, and exceptionally, glasses, bone and metal implements, document the human presence of the successive populations that lived in the place currently occupied by the town of Oeiras over a period of about 500 years, contributing to the knowledge of its economy and social organization. Together with the results of other recently published interventions, this study is a contribution to the knowledge of the ancient occupation of this urban space during Roman times.
Cardoso, João Luís; Martins, Filipe; Leitão, VascoWe studied the mammal remains recovered from the Early Neolithic settlement of Encosta de Sant’Ana (Lisbon), with important housing structures and abundant archaeological materials, whose absolute chronology lies in the transition from the 6th to the 5th millennium BC. The diversity of exploited and produced resources was observed, represented, in descending order of the number of remains identified, by the rabbit, followed by the pig/wild boar, the deer and probably the aurochs, in terms of wild species; and for pigs, caprines (sheep and goats), and dogs, in terms of domestic species. The characteristics identified of the food economy, allowing the comparison made with the scarce results available for other archaeological sites of the same period known in the Lisbon Peninsula.
Cardoso, João Luís; Bottaini, CarloThis study is based on the analysis of copper metal alloys from 109 artifacts collected in the excavations carried out in the walled Chalcolithic settlement of Outeiro Redondo (Sesimbra) using X‑ray fluorescence and compares these results with those obtained by the same team in the walled Chalcolithic town of Leceia, about 50 km away. It was concluded that the compositions of the metallic alloys did not differ during the two phases of occupation verified of the settlement, that dates back to the end of the Early Chalcolithic and the Full/Late Chalcolithic, encompassing an interval of about 500 years. It was also concluded, based on the comparative exercise carried out with the results obtained in Leceia, and in other Chalcolithic sites in the Portuguese territory, that the presence of arsenic in the studied copper alloys assumes an occasional character, resulting from the nature of the ores used, and not from any intentional addition; in fact, it appears that the arsenic frequency curves obtained for both sites show a normal Gaussian distribution, although the average levels of arsenic in Outeiro Redondo are slightly higher than those found in Leceia. It was noted, however, the presence of higher levels of arsenic in a specific type of instrument analysed, the saws or handsaws, compared to the rest of the artifacts, both in Outeiro Redondo and in Leceia.
Cardoso, João LuísA set of eleven chalcolithic polished first phalanges, ten of which are horse and one domestic ox, transformed into anthropomorphic ideothechnic artifacts is studied. The set was collected in 1941 in a circumscribed space of the neolithic necropolis of the Lapa da Bugalheira cave (Torres Novas). It could originally constitute an altar, organized on one side of the cave and in front of its entrance, or a votive set, related to the ritual or cultual use of the cave. In the same year were collected two phalanges decorated with symbols common to other Chalcolithic ideotechnic artifacts of the Portuguese Extremadura, the Southwest and Southeast of the Iberian Peninsula. They are usually correlated to the Mother Goddess of the agrarian societies of the Mediterranean basin. An inventory of both polished and polished and decorated horse phalanges documented in Portuguese territory up to the present, originating both from funerary spaces and of a domestic nature is also presented.
Cardoso, João Luís; Sánchez, Vicente; Martins, Filipe; Galindo, LorenzoThis article concerns the faunal remains of the first phase of the urban Phoenician occupation of La Rebanadilla, Málaga (Phase IV), at the end of the IX century BC, from a set of structures excavated in the geological substrate. There was a clear predominance of domestic animals, represented, in descending order, by caprines (sheep and goats) and cattle. Residually, other animals of large, medium and small size were identified, also in descending order: pig/boar, aurochs, horse and wild rabbit. Cut marks and traces of fire were identified, as well as other modifications present on the surface of the bones, as a result of the way in which the meat was consumed. Comparison of these results with those obtained at other peninsular archaeological sites, corresponding to the installation of Phoenician populations between the 8th and 6th centuries BC, confirms the full predominance of the goat/cattle binomial, revealing stable and complex communities, with a specialized economy. The correlation between the size of the anatomical segments of the different species identified, based on the corresponding bone remains, and the typology of ceramic productions associated with their consumption was also discussed.

- A lean approach to robotic process automation in bankingPublication . São Mamede, Henrique; Martins, Carina Maria Gonçalves; Silva, Miguel Mira daAutomation is a concept that has been previously introduced in organizations as a means to improve their processes. However, Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is an emerging method to automate processes with software, which the industry calls robots. These robots perform repetitive and low-complexity tasks previously performed by humans in front of a computer which as is known is the most commonly used feature in a company nowadays. Using the Design Science Research methodology to build up this article, it is argued that RPA is being used idly compared to its full potential which would entail using process improvement techniques before applying the automation itself. Thus, this article proposes a new approach to RPA through the use of Lean techniques. This article assesses two market leaders in RPA. It suggests a framework of activities for organizations that are investing in RPA and that want to take advantage of the capabilities currently offered by this technology. The majority of the demonstration proposal was carried out in a Portuguese private bank in three processes. Depending on the different cases, it had an overall positive evaluation in the field or simulations. Comparing RPA and Lean RPA projects in the number of resources (time, FTE) needed to carry out business processes, the latter approach presented values that were significantly lower and, consequently, satisfactory.
