- Beware of the “Lessons” you already learnedPublication . Sousa, Ivo Dias deWe live in a society of knowledge. Knowledge is the fundamental key to hold the power of the things that surround us. Without knowledge, we are not able to access many activities that we take for granted, such as driving a car or communicating through a smartphone. Knowledge is everywhere. It is inside us and it regulates, partially, what we do and don’t do. But not all knowledge we have is true and useful. Some of that knowledge are “lessons” that aren’t in our best interest. We, as individuals or society, sometimes learn“lessons” that aren’t good for us.

- Book review: the luck factor by Richard WisemanPublication . Sousa, Ivo Dias deI wonder if you are curious about luck like me. If so, I bet you’ve asked to yourself many times if luck was a genetic trait, or just a random good chance. Everybody knows what It “luck” means. Luck signifies to either have success or failure, which apparently is brought by chance rather than through one’s own actions. But is it true that luck is such a random phenomenon ? And if not, could we train ourselves to become more lucky ? And if so, how could we do it ? The book “The Luck Factor: The Scientific Study of the Lucky Mind”, that was written by Richard Wiseman, tries to answer these and other questions about luck from a scientific point of view as the book is the result of various years of scholarly research on luck. Richard Wiseman is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom, who has done considerable research for various years on why some people are more lucky then others. Wiseman was a magician before graduating in Psychology from University College London (UCL). He has a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Edinburgh.

- Counterclockwise : a proven way to think yourself younger and healthierPublication . Sousa, Ivo Dias de“Counterclockwise” is thought provoking book about health and aging. The author defends that our health and real age (biological age) depends a lot more then we think in what we think and interact with the world around us. That means we can live better and more by changing what we do and think. Ellen Langer is lecturer and a researcher on subjects like illusion of control, mindful aging, stress, decision-making, and health. The author was the first woman to gain tenure in the Psychology Department at Harvard University and she is considered to be a pioneering researcher in successful aging. “Counterclockwise” is one of her eleven books. She is also author of more than one hundred scientific articles. What I think is particular to this book is that it defies many preconceived notions we usually have around health and aging. The key idea of the book is that biological age and health depends more then we usually think of society around us and what we do and think. It is a cliché to say that we are only as old as we feel. According to Ellen Langer the cliché is literally partially true and it can work for or against us.
