Abstract(s)
The search for an explanation of life after death has always occupied the imagination of the human mind. From the outset, when we ask ourselves who we are, where we came from, where we are going, we feel a certain restlessness. The belief in life after death assumes great social importance for believers, as this reality interferes with their daily lives. This research aimed to understand and study, from the point of view of Social Sciences, the impact of the belief in life after death on everyday life, based on those who attend a Funchal Spiritist Centre. The goal was to understand the life paths of people who say they see, hear, feel and talk to people who have died and how they manage this experience, which is often stigmatized by the surrounding society and families. The methodology adopted, as it is considered the most suitable for approaching this sensitive and private topic, which is often still concealed, was qualitative, through the carrying out of a case study, using the techniques of collecting participant observation from a group that studies mediumship and carrying out in-depth, semi-structured interviews with believers. The main results show the importance that the belief in life after death assumes in the lives of the study participants and that it is not just an individual issue but is also a social phenomenon that influences the daily lives of people who have it in various dimensions of social and family relationships. The mediumistic experiences that participants have and do not know how to deal with are the main factor that leads them to look for a Spiritist Centre. This becomes the space where they can share their beliefs and reflections on the practice of mediumship, with others, in similar circumstances regardless of gender and social origins. These beliefs assume a preponderant role and translate into a philosophy of life reflected in daily choices, in the search for meaning in their life and existence through spiritualism and the understanding of one's spirituality.
