This paper presents and discusses the results of an empirical study carried out in the district of Porto (Portugal), which aims to analyse the perceptions of young people in residential care and professionals in the promotion and protection system about the process of residential care, the conditions in which it takes place (the institutional framework and the characterisation of the social response), the exercise of young people's rights, and preparation for independent living, in an ambitious attempt to understand the places of social (re)production and the way in which preparation for autonomy takes place. The research adopts a qualitative approach by empirically analysing the experiences of 9 young people in residential care and 29 professionals, based on interviews and participant observation. The identification of a priori and emerging categories reflects the particularities of the participants' narratives, such as perceptions of the concept of family, situations of danger, institutional relationships, highlighting vulnerabilities and the struggle for empowerment and autonomy within (and outside) the institutions of young people in residential care. This analysis aims to contextualise the personal stories and engage with existing literature to enhance our understanding of the observed social reality. The results emphasised the importance of institutional relationships and educational and personal qualifications, as well as the significance of community social networks in the autonomisation process of young people in care. This research has the potential to contribute significantly to future investigations in this field, emphasising the importance of empirical research and the necessity of providing young people with a voice within institutional structures. This would enable more appropriate reformulation of public policies and institutional practices that directly affect them.
