Abstract(s)
Este estudo trata das representações sociais. As representações sociais
This study deals with social representations. Social representations are what individuals think they know and are persuaded to know about objects, people, and situations. Representing is an act of thought by which a subject establishes a relationship of interpretation and symbolization with an object. Our research aims to identify whether the social representations that foreign students on university exchange have of Brazil and Brazilians after moving to that country coincide or not with the stereotypes of Brazil and Brazilians in their countries. It also aims to investigate whether the perception that foreign students on university exchange have of their own country and their culture of origin can be changed through immersion in another country (and, consequently, in another culture) and interaction with its inhabitants, in this case the Brazil and Brazilians. The processes of construction, deconstruction, and reconstruction of each individual's representations are linked to the information that each one possesses and the interactions that each one carries out. Interactions with others can trigger a process of reflection where the other shows (through difference) how we are, how we think, and how we live. It is the recognition of the other and the rediscovery of oneself, of one's identity, through the other. There is a dialectical relationship between identity and culture. The very construction of the images with which individuals perceive themselves passes through the tangle of their cultures, at the points of intersection with their individual lives. Culture permeates everything that happens in individuals' lives and all the representations they have of it.
