Abstract(s)
The present research focuses on the analysis of the play O Lodo, from Alfredo Cortez, presented for the first time on the 2nd July 1923, and about the aesthetic tendencies present on it. From the drama production of this author, this play was chosen because of its vanguard characteristics and because of the discussion caused by it when it was dramatized by the author. Firstly, the play is historically and culturally contextualized, playing special attention to the year of 1923. The theoretical background is also made, specially focusing on naturalism and existentialism and on the main voices that support these tendencies. Regarding naturalism in Portugal, Júlio Lourenço Pinto is highlighted, and regarding existentialism Kierkegaard, Heidegger and Sartre are discussed. To do so, the characteristics that distinguish the two tendencies are considered and the aesthetic evolution in Portugal between the end of the 19th century and the second decade of the 20th century, in what drama is concerned, is analysed. Secondly, the play that constitutes the corpus of this investigation is analysed, in order to prove the presence of existentialist representations in it. A brief study of the reaction that the play gave origin to is done, taking into account documents found in periodicals. Finally, the conclusions of this investigation will be presented, on what the prevalence of existentialist presence in the play O Lodo is concerned, as well as the author’s role in the Portuguese literary and drama history.
