Abstract(s)
The aim of this study is to discuss the narrative fundamental processes in the constitution of the superheroine figure in Em Busca do Mar Certo, by Cri Essencia. It is because the gender studies in women’s literature highlight how female characters should not merely viewed as aesthetic elements of the narrative but also as symbols of resistance against the various chal-lenges faced by women. This perspective underscores how women’s writing reflects and comments on the social realities experienced by the authors. To this, we trust on interdisciplinary approaches that combine gender studies with analyses of heroism narratives in fiction. Through a detailed reading of the novel under analysis, we explore the narrative, thematic, and symbolic elements that contribute to the construction of the protagonist as a superheroine. The concept of the superheroine examined through the theoretical frameworks of Campbell (1997) and Vogler (2006), which discuss both heroism in its various artistic manifestations and the ways in which heroic figures challenge or reaf-firm traditional norms. The analysis of the work reveals that Cri Essencia constructs the protagonist through experi-ences rooted in the author's life, enabling the reader to connect with and understand the de-velopment of a central character whose journey shaped by her life trajectory. This character, named Paula Chongoene, is portrayed through elements that symbolise female empower-ment, with a journey marked by travels from Maputo to Lisbon, and from there to the wider world, in pursuit of further education and independence. The challenges she faces— inclu-ding financial difficulties in funding her studies, various social conflicts such as those with her brother Miguel, feelings of inferiority, and attempts at objectification and sexualisation—symbolise courage, determination, strength, and resilience. These aspects lead us to envision new models of superheroine construction that diverge from the archetypes of comic books and propose alternative ways of understanding the female condition.
