Abstract(s)
The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze, from a gender perspective, narratives about female bodies in the context of the sport of bodybuilding. Specifically, it is interested in investigating, analyzing and revealing bodybuilding athletes' perspectives on their practice, their bodies and, in particular, on the concept of femininity, which is one of the requirements for evaluation in competition in the Women's Physique Category. The intention is to give visibility to the athletes and the sport. Based on Gender and Cultural Studies, the study, discussions and conclusions of the research were drawn up. The research instrument used was semi-structured interviews with female bodybuilders. The messages were analyzed from the perspective of Laurence Bardin. The content expressed by the athletes was examined in relation to their experiences, their career in the sport and their conceptions of femininity and beauty within bodybuilding, highlighting the ideals and stereotypes of normalized femininity that circumscribe women's bodies. Finally, it is understood that the athletes' heavily muscled appearance breaks with historically produced representations of the feminine, confronting stereotypes and hegemonic representations of masculinity and femininity and pointing to new representations, new references and new possibilities for women's bodies.
