Abstract(s)
This study examines the impact of Facebook as a communication and information-sharing tool in a school library located on São Miguel Island, focusing on promoting information literacy and fostering school communities in virtual environments. The primary objective is to assess how the library’s digital presence contributes to user interaction and the dissemination of pedagogical practices, addressing the challenges associated with the digital environment. The research corpus was built from the collection of posts and interactions on the official Facebook page of the library during the 2021/2022 academic year. Additionally, user perceptions were gathered through a questionnaire, and a structured interview was conducted with the school library coordinator. These complementary methods provided essential quantitative and qualitative data to explore the specific dynamics of the virtual community associated with the library, as well as the impacts of communication in the educational context. The theoretical foundation of the study is based on essential concepts concerning social networks, virtual communities, and the role of school libraries as mediators of knowledge in digital environments. This theoretical basis provided information to critically and contextually interpret the data, highlighting the advantages and challenges of integrating digital platforms, with particular emphasis on Facebook as a tool for connecting the library with the school community. The findings demonstrate that Facebook, when used strategically, can serve as an effective tool for promoting educational practices and strengthening relationships within school communities in virtual environments. However, the need for more meticulous management strategies is emphasised, particularly regarding privacy, content reach, and impact monitoring. The study concludes that the integration of Facebook into school library practices must be accompanied by robust planning aligned with pedagogical objectives, ensuring its relevance and sustainability in contemporary educational contexts.
