A expansão marítima portuguesa dos séculos XV e XVI foi de uma importância crucial na História de Portugal e da Europa. Este período foi marcado por descobertas, conquistas e conflitos. Assim sendo, a literatura histórica produzida durante este período, a cronística, dá-nos a conhecer os principais eventos e personagens desta época.
De entre as inúmeras obras produzidas na época já referida destacam-se duas: as «Lendas da Índia» de Gaspar Correia e a «História do Descobrimento e da Conquista da Índia pelos Portugueses» de Fernão Lopes de Castanheda. Assim sendo, este estudo propõe-se realizar uma análise comparativa das principais obras dos autores anteriormente referidos, examinando as diferenças e semelhanças no modo como cada um descreve a expansão portuguesa, centrando a atenção numa cidade do Oriente que teve uma grande importância estratégica para o Império português no Oriente: a cidade de Goa.
Consequentemente, como os dois autores fazem uma descrição das atividades e dos acontecimentos relacionados com a presença dos portugueses na Índia, este trabalho realiza um estudo comparativo que pretende analisar como ambos os autores descrevem a história, a administração, as conquistas e todos os desafios enfrentados pelos portugueses nesta região.
The Portuguese maritime expansion of the 15th and 16th centuries was of crucial importance in the history of Portugal and Europe. This period was marked by discoveries, conquests, and conflicts. As such, the historical literature produced during this time—known as chronicles—provides insight into the main events and figures of the era. Among the numerous works produced during this period, two stand out: Lendas da Índia by Gaspar Correia and História do Descobrimento e da Conquista da Índia pelos Portugueses by Fernão Lopes de Castanheda. Therefore, this study aims to carry out a comparative analysis of the main works of the aforementioned authors, examining the differences and similarities in how each describes the Portuguese expansion, focusing on a city in the East that held great strategic importance for the Portuguese Empire in the Orient: the city of Goa. Consequently, since both authors describe the activities and events related to the Portuguese presence in India, this work conducts a comparative study that seeks to analyze how both authors portray the history, administration, conquests, and all the challenges faced by the Portuguese in this region.
