Abstract(s)
No entanto, a
The poetry of Cesário Verde, sparsely published in some newspapers during the poet’s life time, didn’t have, at the time, a favourable reception neither from readers – who preferred the sentimentalist poetry they were used to and despised the realistic themes that Cesário used – nor from the intellectuals – who criticized the poet for breaking the literary tradition and creating a poetry considered worthless and of bad taste. However, the posthumous publication of O Livro de Cesário Verde arouse, in Brazil, particular interest among the younger poets, such as Augusto dos Anjos, interested in renewing poetry, enlightening it with the spirit of science and philosophical concepts in vogue at the time. The poetry of the Brazilian poet Augusto dos Anjos has often been considered influenced by Cesário Verde, based on similar circumstances that occurred in the life and literary course of both poets. In this study, it is confirmed that Augusto dos Anjos actually was a reader of Cesário, not only because of biographical issues usually mentioned, but especially by the way the former rewrote Cesário, assuming himself the same condition of misunderstood poet, becoming a precursor in Brazil of a vanguard poetry which would be confirmed by the following literary generation of Modernism.
