Abstract(s)
restabelece a aliança universal.
The Search for Essence and the Absolute in the Work of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen aims to provide a wide-ranging study of the work of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, a singular and fundamental poet within the context of contemporary Portuguese literature. My research has followed the main thematic axes of the poetâs work, which thus constitute the three parts of this study: - In a Time Divided is an in-depth analysis of the nature of time, a central thematic concern of the poetâs work, which leads her from the âTime of Memoryâ through the âTime of Revoltâ to a conclusive and luminous arrival at a âTime Pure, Ancient and Primordialâ. - Navigations is the study of an eternal journey of discovery, where, through the foundational power of the gaze and the act of naming, Sophia recreates the adventure of the Portuguese Discoveries, transforming this course into an initiatory discovery of the self and the other, an âEpic of Wonderâ amidst the âvehemence of the visibleâ, leading inevitably to a âSacred Journeyâ in which the truth of Being is revealed. - The Name of Things is a comparative study of the solemn and originating act of naming that poetry establishes. It is through drawing a parallel with the work of other authors, such as Fernando Pessoa or Jorge Luis Borges, for whom poetry is also to be found on the boundary between immanence and transcendence that we can best grasp the specificity of the work of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, whose poetic word, magical and divining, reestablishes the universal alliance. Simultaneously classical and modern, an intrinsic renovator and devotee of poetic language, the poet returns the word to its original dignity and purity. The work of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen is, unquestionably, a monument unmatched in the current literary landscape. Through its unceasing search for an ancient and enduring truth, its infinite and universal humanism reveals the Essence and Absolute nature of a Reality lost in the night of ages.
