A Fundação para a Computação CientĂfica Nacional, FCCN, Ă© a entidade responsĂĄvel pela
gestĂŁo e operação da RCTS. A RCTS â Rede CiĂȘncia, Tecnologia e Sociedade Ă© a rede de
investigação e ensino nacional, a qual assenta numa infra-estrutura Ăłptica que permite transferĂȘncias de dados de muito alto-dĂ©bito. A RCTS interliga as principais instituiçÔes de ensino superior nacionais, assim como os LaboratĂłrios de Estado e entidades de I&D. A VideoconferĂȘncia Ă© um dos serviços avançados disponibilizado pela FCCN Ă sua vasta comunidade de utilizadores finais. Este artigo descreve alguns dos projectos concretizados pela FCCN nos Ășltimos 10 anos, na ĂĄrea da VideoconferĂȘncia. Ă descrito o processo que
motivou e criou a Rede de VideoconferĂȘncia da RCTS, assim como alguns usos que esta
permite para os seus utilizadores.

RCTS is a new generation network. It uses a optical backbone, which allow ultra-high bandwidth data transfers. It reaches all the Portuguese Universities and Polytechnic institutions. FCCN, as network manager provides and promotes last generation innovative services among these institutions. Videoconference is a service promoted by FCCN integrated in its Advanced Services Area. This article describes some of FCCN projects undertaken in the last 10 years and presents also the most recent Videoconference services. It describes the process that has motivated and created the RCTS Videoconference Network as well some of the use cases that it enable for all its users.
