O presente estudo de caso analisa as reações à notícia da vacinação dos imigrantes em
situação irregular contra a Covid-19. Procedeu-se à recolha e análise dos comentários
redigidos pelos leitores de notícias online, em resposta a uma notícia publicada nos media
portugueses a 3 de junho de 2021 que relatava o anúncio feito pelo vice-almirante
Gouveia e Melo, coordenador da task force da vacinação contra a Covid-19, durante uma
entrevista emitida pela RTP3, sobre a intenção de vacinar os imigrantes não legalizados.
Este a notícia foi amplamente divulgada nos media portugueses, inclusive nas suas
páginas de Internet e nas redes sociais. Á data da publicação da notícia, Portugal
encontrava-se ainda com medidas de confinamento em vigor devido à pandemia de
Covid-19 e estava em curso a execução do plano de vacinação.
Recorreu-se a uma metodologia qualitativa, com o objetivo de compreender as
motivações e os argumentos subjacentes à concordância ou discordância com a medida
anunciada, expressa nos comentários, explorando, nesse contexto, também a perceção
dos consumidores de media na internet em relação aos imigrantes em situação irregular e
à vacinação.
Os resultados do estudo indicam uma variedade de perceções e opiniões, que vão desde
o respeito pela diversidade e a solidariedade até ao preconceito e à hostilidade.
Foi também possível compreender que os comentadores não estavam devidamente
informados sobre as questões legais da imigração, bem como a importância de discutir a
terminologia utilizada, já que termos como "imigrantes ilegais" podem levar a uma visão
negativa e estigmatizada, enquanto o termo "imigrantes em situação irregular" é mais
preciso e neutro.
This study presents a qualitative analysis of reactions to the Covid-19 vaccination of irregular immigrants, based on online news readers' comments to a news piece published in the Portuguese media on June 3rd, 2021. Portugal was still under pandemic-related restrictions and had started implementing the vaccination plan at the time of publication. The objective of the study was to comprehend the motivations and arguments that shaped the agreement or disagreement with the announcement of vaccination for irregular immigrants, while exploring media consumers' perceptions towards this population and vaccination. The results revealed a range of opinions, from solidarity and respect for diversity to prejudice and hostility. The study also highlighted that the commentators had limited knowledge of the legal issues surrounding immigration and the importance of using neutral terminology. The term "irregular immigrants" was found to be more accurate and neutral than "illegal immigrants," which can lead to negative and stigmatized views. This study contributes to understanding public perceptions of vaccination for irregular immigrants and provides insight into the importance of accurate terminology in media discourse.
