This research study focuses on the experiences of transgender people in a hospital in the northern part of the country. Its objectives are to understand their perceptions of the care they receive, identify difficulties/barriers, and positive aspects of the experiences of transgender people in this context. A qualitative study was designed, in which 16 semi-structured interviews were conducted with transgender people who attend the Sexology and Gender Unit between January and July 2025. The results were analyzed using content analysis and originated five categories of analysis: interaction with health professionals, structural and organizational issues, perceptions of clinical knowledge and training, the most memorable experience, and the role of society in the inclusion and support of transgender people. We identified difficulties such as waiting times for some appointments and surgeries, as well as contacting the hospital by telephone. The results suggest positive and inclusive experiences, with emphasis on the role of health professionals and all employees in other areas. We observed the proper use of names and pronouns, as well as the perception of good training of professionals regarding the health of transgender people. Law No. 38/2018 of August 7 and the publication of the Health Strategy for LGBTI people by the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) in 2019 may have contributed to this. We have seen increased demand for health services from transgender people and the implementation of various training initiatives in this area. Further studies in this area are needed to better understand their experiences and needs, facilitating the implementation of more effective health and inclusion policies and promoting respect and equality.
