Abstract(s)
mundividência oitocentista, atentando particularmente no período artístico do
This Master's dissertation presents a reading of the poetic work of Mariana Belmira de Andrade (1844-1923) entitled A Sibila (Versos Filosóficos), published in Velas, Ilha de São Jorge, in 1884. Since the poet was born on the island of São Jorge, in the Azores, where she lived practically all her life, we opted for bibliographic resources on the national historical-cultural context, but also on the island in order to understand the influences to which the Author would have been submitted during her childhood, youth and adult life that could have operated and conditioned the way she was and acted. Thus, we chose to place a special focus, firstly, on the nineteenth-century worldview, paying particular attention to the artistic period of Romanticism in its literary aspect, which so profoundly marks this century, while relating it to the peculiarities of life in society. Next, we focus especially on the island experience, where we point out as main characteristics the consequences of geographical isolation, such as the maintenance of an elitist and conservative society. In the meantime, we divide our attention into a structural and thematic reading of Mariana's work. We begin by reflecting on the poet's choices in relation to formal aspects, considering Romanticism for its hybridity and complexity, which brings us to the themes, images and motifs that allow the integration of the work in this literary period.
