Abstract(s)
The fundamental purpose of this project was, through the study of a restricted corpus of traditional São Toméan tales and an Aesopian fable, and through interviews and oral narratives and testimonies from considered people of São Tomé society, to evaluate the behaviour of the protagonists of the plot (mainly the character Turtle) from the point of view of morality, and to find similarities and dissimilarities in their actions. Further formulating consensual conclusions about how the wit and cunning often used by the characters are capable of engendering the construction of a healthy morality, comparing the exemplary purpose of Aesop's fable with the corresponding designs in the daily life of São Tomé oral tales, especially the well-known "sóia". The conclusion reached was that, in general, the Tortoise symbolises in traditional São Tomé tales the persistence and compensation of the weak face to face to supremacy of the powerful, as revealed in the Aesopian fable. Although not always it succeeds in its intentions, as the fickle dynamics of human existence mean. Another conclusive aspect is the soothing and cathartic role of the sóias, typical of the nights of the nozadu (wake) in São Tomé and Príncipe and, moreover, the cultural and educational slant of the proverbs and sentences conveyed mainly in Creole forro, and the modelling role of the language, forged as a result of secular miscegenation and handled in an artistic way by the griots or storytellers - and the phenomenon of the emergence of the Portuguese variety of São Tomé and Príncipe.
