- Osseous industry and exploitation of animal resources in Southern Iberia during the Upper PalaeolithicPublication . Évora, MarinaDuring the Upper Palaeolithic, several climatic events were recorded in some archaeological sites in the Southern Iberian Peninsula. The aim is to focus on the relations between those phenomena and the mammal species hunted by hunter-gatherers groups, and whose bones were used, along with lithics, as raw material for manu facturing their bone toolkits. Hunter-gatherers seemed to have had a preference on hunting ungulates species that are gregarious such as red deer and goat, one of the characteristics of the faunal assemblages from the archaeological sites located near the coastal zones, including Vale Boi and Cendres in Southern Iberia. Regarding their toolkits, there was a preference in choosing mammal bone for the manufacture of their hunting and fishing equipment, as well as other utensils of daily life, during the Gravettian and Solutrean. Hunter-gatherers were preferably hunting juvenile and female red deer that do not have antlers. The opposite occurred during the Magdalenian, where red deer antler was used much more as a raw material. The Final Magdalenian and Epimagdalenian saw a decrease in the quantities of osseous artefacts and even a total absence of harpoons in Southern Iberian archaeological assemblages.

- Pleistocene zooarchaeology and taphonomy at Abrigo da Buraca da Moira (Central Portugal)Publication . Alexandre Paya; Telmo Pereira; Jordi Rosell; Patrícia Monteiro; Eduardo Paixão; David Nora; Sandra Assis; Carlos Simões; Évora, Marina; Vânia Carvalho; Trenton HollidayThe Last Glacial Maximum brought long-term harsh climatic and environmental conditions. Because of that, human groups had to adapt to such changes, which was done through the development of new technologies, ecodynamics and settlement patterns. Buraca da Moira is a cave in Central Portugal with LGM human occupations in which faunal remains with different preservation conditions were recovered. The geomorphological setting of the site, in a valley sheltered from strong winds, with access to both lithic raw materials and fresh water, proves advantageous for Pleistocene human groups to settle in such places. This presentation focuses on the zooarchaeological assemblage recovered from the layers associated with the LGM, including the taphonomical patterns. Our results showed the diversity of fauna consumed between the Solutrean and the Gravettian, and the anthropic activity on some specimens, such as cut marks, impact notches and burning, while carnivore activity was sparse. Together, this allowed us to access the nature of the accumulation and its relationship with the remaining archaeological materials.
