Cardoso, João LuísWe describe the action taken by the Cremonese Leonardo Turriano (c. 1550‑1629) in Barcarena, between 1618 and 1621/1622, in the scope of gunpowder production, when he designed and supervised the construction of a vast factory building, introducing manufacturing technology using galga mills, already previously used in other gunpowder factories in the Portuguese overseas space. The other aspect of the activity carried out in Barcarena by this Chief Engineer of the Kingdom, a position he had held since 1591, involved the recovery of the Ferrarias building, in order to the production of harquebushes and muskets other than nails and rigging for shipbuilding, which at the time were abandoned. Such initiatives are now especially well known for the notable drawings made by Turriano included in a codex preserved in the National Library of Portugal, accompanied by a descriptive text prepared by himself after he had ceased to function in Barcarena following the exoneration, in 1621, by Filipe IV (Filipe III of Portugal) of the Viceroy Dom Diogo da Silva, Marquês de Alenquer. For the knowledge of the works carried out in Barcarena by Turriano, important royal correspondence and other coeval documentation, preserved in Portuguese and Spanish archives, are published. This conclusions were completed with the results obtained in the archaeological excavations conducted by the author in 2009 and which led to the positive identification of the Ferrarias building, founded by King D. João II, in 1487 which were at the origin of the technological‑military complex of Barcarena, whose activity ran without interruption for more than 500 years, ceasing only in 1988.
Cardoso, João LuísThis paper will successively address the main raw materials of non-metallic geological origin that were used for the manufacture of artifacts of different nature throughout the 4th and 3rd millennia BC in Portuguese territory. This is an essay that will be partially supported by case studies, to understand the importance of such raw materials, whether used for the manufacture of everyday artifacts, whether they are of an exotic nature, or intended for pieces of exception, including adornment objects and ideotechnic productions, as a result, in some cases, of long distance trade.
- Expectations and disappointments on the part of institutions in the process of reception and integration of refugees in PortugalPublication . Magano, Olga; Sousa, Lúcio; Costa, Paulo Manuel; Bäckström, Bárbara; Albuquerque, RosanaPortugal joined the European movement to welcome refugees in 2015, and there was an unprecedented phenomenon of civil society mobilization to provide shelter to refugees, overlapping at times the State. The model adopted for hosting refugees was related to the involvement of civil society, which meant that the relocation program assumed two structuring characteristics: the geographical dispersion of refugees throughout the country and the institutional diversity of the structures that carried out their placement. To know the practices developed by the host institutions and the circumstances of the interaction between their staff and refugees allows us to understand the role of local agency aimed at the reception of refugees and its impacts. Attitudes and feelings of disillusionment and disappointment can clash with the expectations of welcoming initiatives, which are often based on a constructed image of refugees as grateful, innocent victims and deserving of help. The aim of this article focuses on the practices and perceptions of representatives of local institutions regarding their relocation experiences. Thus, results obtained on the relocation process from the point of view of the institutions and on opportunities and challenges faced for the integration of refugees relocated in Portugal, as well as feelings, expectations and disappointments, are presented.

- Why companies adopt supply chain sustainability practices: a study of companies in BrazilPublication . Romano, Andre; Ferreira, Luís Miguel D. F.; Caeiro, SandraWith the increased concern about social and environmental impacts, managing sustainability in supply chains has become a focus of interest. In consequence, companies are adopting supply chain sustainability practices also due to pressures from various stakeholders. Questions arise about how certain types of pressures can influence the adoption of behavioral and technical practices related to sustainability and how these relationships vary along supply chains. The research utilizes data from Brazilian companies and employs structural equation modelling to investigate the adoption of sustainability practices in supply chains. Normative and mimetic pressures positively affect behavioral and technical practices. On the other hand, coercive pressures have no influence on the adoption of sustainability practices, whether technical or behavioral. The findings enhance the understanding of how institutional pressures shape the adoption of sustainability practices, benefiting companies and policymakers aiming to promote sustainable supply chains.
