- Health, ageing migrants and care strategiesPublication . Bäckström, BárbaraThis article is the result of a study that seeks to understand the relationship between socio-economic conditions, health and active ageing. Behaviours related to active ageing in relation to health were identified as were the strategies used in active ageing and their determinants. A qualitative methodology was adopted in the form of semi-structured interviews. Data processing consisted of thematic content analysis in interviews. Two socio-economic groups of elderly Cape Verdean men and women composed the study sample. Both groups totalled 22 cases. Findings indicated that the socio-economic status interferes directly in the affairs of active ageing rather than health issues. In the higher socio-economic group, it was found that status determines active ageing rather than health issues.
- np-Charts for attribute controlPublication . Leiva, Victor; Oliveira, AmilcarIn this article, we introduce charts for attribute control considering the number of defective items, named np‐charts. These charts are preferable over charts for proportion (p) of defective items, named p‐charts, when the sample size (n) remains constant for all subgroups. The benefits of using np‐charts over p‐charts are: an easier interpretation and the fact that no calculation is required for each sample result. We provide a review of the basic issues related to np‐charts and some recent ideas on the topic based on life distributions. In addition, we discuss an implementation of np‐charts in the R software by using examples with data on attributes and lifetimes.
- The zurich axioms: the rules of risk and reward used by generations of swiss bankersPublication . Sousa, Ivo Dias deThe Zurich Axioms” is a slim book that should be on the library of every investor and, perhaps, entrepreneur and manager. It is a book about risk management. The book delivers a collection of principles about how to deal with risk (12 major and 16 minor axioms). The axioms are a sort of rule of thumb for dealing with risk. Curiously, in a way, the axioms are more about dealing with the limitations of the human psyche than with investments. Max Gunther (1927-1998) was a journalist and writer born in England. He lived most of his life in the United States. He worked and wrote for magazines like Business Week, Time Magazine, Playboy and Reader’s Digest.
