Católicos e política na crise do Liberalismo: o percurso de António Lino Neto (1873-1934)

| dc.description.abstract | A presente tese analisa o pensamento e acção de um dirigente católico, António Lino Neto (1873-1961), no contexto das relações entre o Estado português e a Igreja Católica na crise do liberalismo iniciada na última década do séc. XIX e que conhece um desfecho com a instauração do Estado Novo na década de 1930. A intervenção pública de António Lino Neto é contextualizada nas fases políticas que o Estado português atravessa ao longo da crise do liberalismo: monarquia constitucional, I República, ditadura militar e Estado Novo. As dinâmicas políticas católicas em Portugal são abordadas tendo em consideração a evolução política nacional, as relações Igreja Católica/Estado e as mudanças de orientação dos pontificados de Leão XIII, Pio X, Bento XV e Pio XI. António Lino Neto foi um homem institucional: professor catedrático de economia política desde 1908 e presidente do Centro Católico Português de 1919 a 1934. No período da República do pós Grande Guerra foi um protagonista do catolicismo político que procurou secundarizar a questão do regime, distinguindo entre a obediência aos poderes constituídos e a crítica à legislação injusta. Foi perdendo relevância no contexto da emergência de um poder autocrático que, em regime formal de separação entre Estado e Igreja, reconhecia o valor social do catolicismo e se entendia directamente com uma hierarquia católica cujo poder sobre a organização eclesiástica foi reforçado ao longo do período em análise. | por |
| dc.description.abstract | This thesis analyses the thought and action of a catholic leader, António Lino Neto (1873-1961), within the context of the relationships between the Portuguese State and the Catholic Church, during the crisis of liberalism, which started in the last decade of the 19th century, and ended with the establishment of the New State in the 1930s. The public intervention of António Lino Neto is framed within the political periods that the Portuguese State went through, throughout the crisis of liberalism: constitutional monarchy, First Republic, military dictatorship, and the New State. The Catholic political dynamics in Portugal are issued, taking into account the national political evolution, the relations between the Catholic Church and the State, as well as the changes of direction occurring at the pontificates of Leo XIII, Pius X, Benedict XV, and Pius XI. António Lino Neto was an institutional man, full professor of political economics since 1908, and president of the Centro Católico Português, from 1919 to 1934. In the period of the post-world war Republic, he held a leading role in the political Catholicism, which endeavoured to put in second place the question of the regime, by distinguishing the obedience towards the ruling powers from the criticism of unjust legislation. Gradually, António Lino Neto lost his relevance within the context of the emergence of an autocratic power that, under formal separation between State and Church, recognized the social value of Catholicism, and that got along with a Catholic hierarchy whose power over the ecclesiastical organization was strengthened during the period under consideration. | eng |
