Imagens de animais no Ms. 1 Azul da Academia das Ciências de Lisboa: coerência simbólica e estímulo à reflexão

| dc.description.abstract | Estudo de um conjunto de iluminuras com representações de animais existentes no ms. 1 Azul da Crónica de 1344, atualmente na Academia da Ciências de Lisboa. Defende-se que estas imagens (que têm sido consideradas e estudadas sobretudo pela sua vertente decorativa) transportam uma carga semântica significativa que interpelaria o público que observasse o códice e tivesse capacidade exegética para o ler em todas as suas dimensões. Para atestar esta posição, as imagens são trianguladas com o texto da crónica e com os significados atribuídos a esses animais em bestiários, livros das aves e na tradição bíblica. Numa primeira parte, estuda-se a coerência da presença de imagens de uma determinada criatura (o dragão) em pontos-chave da narrativa, funcionando como dispositivos de alerta para momentos mais fraturantes da história peninsular (pecados, dissensões, invasões). Seguidamente, na segunda parte, são apresentadas leituras holísticas de dois quadros, formados pelo códice aberto. Nestes fólios, existem imagens de animais diversificados, como leões, águias, cães, carneiros, cervos e leopardos, que, tendo em conta a sua dimensão simbólica, mostram ter uma valência de estímulos, enquanto promotores de reflexões sobre temas éticos e morais, de caráter abstrato, no que se refere à profundidade semântica atribuída aos animais, mas que também encontram uma certa concretização nos episódios relatados pelo texto da crónica. | dc.description.abstract | Study of a set of illuminations depicting animals in Ms. 1 Azul of the Chronicle of 1344, currently in the Lisbon Academy of Sciences. It is argued that these images (which have been considered and studied mainly for their decorative aspect) carry a significant semantic value that would dialogue with the public who observed the codex and had the exegetical capacity to read it in all its dimensions. To prove this, the images are cross-checked with the text of the chronicle and with the meanings attributed to these animals in bestiaries, bird books, and the biblical tradition. In the first part, the coherence of the presence of images of a particular creature (the dragon) at key points in the narrative is studied, functioning as warning devices for some more critical moments in peninsular history (sins, dissensions, invasions). Next, in the second part, holistic readings of two panels formed by the open codex are presented. In these folios, there are images of various animals, such as lions, eagles, dogs, lambs, deer, and leopards, which, taking into account their symbolic dimension, show that they have a specific value as stimuli, promoting reflections on ethical and moral issues of an abstract nature, in terms of the semantic depth attributed to animals, but which also find a certain concreteness in the episodes reported in the text of the chronicle. The results of the study make it possible to emphasise the relevance of applying this interpretative key. | eng |
