Abstract(s)
We all produce waste daily. Avoiding producing waste should always be the primary objective in order to reduce our impact on the planet. Whenever this is not possible, must focus on the correct separation of waste for subsequent recycling, in our homes and in our workplace. As no study was found on the topic of separation of RU in the workplace in an industrial environment, it then seemed to make sense to implement an action research project focusing on this topic. The objectives of this work are: to characterize the process of separation and recycling of urban waste in the cracking complex of the Sines Refinery; identify critical collection points in the manufacturing facility; understand workers' perception of issues related to waste separation; develop and implement improvement proposals and evaluate their impact. Therefore, a methodology was chosen that includes several aspects: analysis of documents provided by the company, survey of 44 workers in the area under study and a campaign to physically characterize undifferentiated waste. The survey revealed that workers agree to separate the different waste for recycling, with 78% saying they separate the different waste for recycling in their own home, but in the workplace, the percentage of affirmative responses decreases to 69% . The workers also recognized the environmental, social and economic impact that the separation and recycling of waste has on the company's future, as well as the company's appreciation for issues linked to the environment, whilst not failing to point out some flaws in the system. In turn, the physical characterization campaigns made it possible to determine that on the days observed, the undifferentiated waste containers contained 13% plastic, 5% paper and 4% glass. As observed in general, the disposal of waste with potential for recycling in the unsorted waste container is a common practice. Proposals for improving the waste management system at the manufacturing facility were developed and presented. These measures are being considered by the company with a view to their future implementation.
