| dc.description.abstract | This chapter examines how the war in Ukraine reshaped the EU’s geopolitical stance, focusing on its impact on foreign, security, and defence policies. The war in Ukraine, initiated by Russia’s illegal actions, represents a breakpoint moment in post-Cold War Europe. The EU’s response from unprecedented sanctions to significant support for Ukraine underscores its transition from a normative power to a more pragmatic geopolitical actor. The conflict has not only tested the EU’s resilience but also prompted a reassessment of its security, borders, and relations with its Eastern neighbours. It represents a departure from its traditional role as a soft power, a transformation which is intertwined with the Union’s pursue for ontological security, the need to maintain its identity and coherence amidst external threats. Understanding this shift is essential for interpreting the EU’s evolving role in global politics and its approach to emerging challenges, including power competition and regional instability. Therefore, this chapter focuses on the following central research questions: How has the war in Ukraine redefined the EU’s approach to security, borders, and its long-term geopolitical vision? Which post-war opportunities and challenges derived from it? In order to explore these questions and contribute to the on-going debate with an original approach, the chapter employs a dual-method approach: process tracing and content analysis. | eng |
