Emília das Neves (1820-1883) é consensualmente considerada a mais notável atriz portuguesa do século XIX. Com uma vida inteiramente dedicada ao teatro e com um repertório extraordinário, urgia recuperar a sua memória, não só porque conseguiremos, desta forma, preencher algumas lacunas da história do teatro dessa época, mas porque estamos perante a figura de uma mulher ímpar no seu tempo. Oriunda de uma família humilde, conseguiu, pelo reconhecimento da sua excecionalidade, captar a atenção de nomes como Almeida Garrett, Mendes Leal, Rebelo da Silva ou Latino Coelho, que a escolheram para protagonista de textos dramáticos de que foram autores ou tradutores.
Emília das Neves (1820-1883) is consensually considered the most remarkable Portuguese actress of the 19th century. With a life dedicated entirely to the theater and with an extraordinary repertoire, it was urgent to recover her memory, not only because we will be able, in this way, to fill in some gaps of the history of the theater of that time, but because we are before the figure of a woman unique in her time. From a humble family, she was able to capture the attention of names such as Almeida Garrett, Mendes Leal, Rebelo da Silva or Latino Coelho, who chose her to be the protagonist of dramatic texts of which they were authors or translators.
