Abstract(s)
In Mozambique, the survival of a large part of the population depends mainly on subsistence farming and biodiversity. This dissertation aims to investigate how local communities relate to biodiversity in the Maputo Special Reserve, in order to comprehend how they understand, explain and how they deal with the biodiversity and the ecosystem services provided by it. An exploratory case study was defined as the Special Reserve of Maputo, where, built on a qualitative methodology based on interviews, we sought to understand how local communities take advantage of biodiversity, appreciate and value the services it provides. Due to the importance of the management and conservation of this geographical area, the understanding of the perceptions of the REM tax team as well as of the Reserve Management seems important, so our study is also directed to them. Based on the observations made and the information gathered from these communities and agents of the reserve control and management, we characterized and described the perceptions and practices around the natural reserve in a first phase, to next identify the underlying lay logics, that is lay rationalities, as forms of producing senses and meanings around biodiversity and its preservation, its environmental, socioeconomic and cultural uses.
