Procurámos, portanto, no presente trabalho conhecer as motivações e os critérios usados para a atribuição de antropónimos, assim como a dimensão social dos mesmos na comunidade em questão. Com recurso a questionários a professores e alunos e entrevista aos possuidores de nomes, familiares, nomencladores e funcionários do registo e notariado da cidade de Tete, assim como através de uma análise documental ao código de registo civil moçambicano, concluímos que a maior parte dos nomencladores e pessoas que já receberam nomes percebem que dar nome significa batizar ou apelidar alguém, que este é um elemento que, em si, veicula poder e mensagem e é um direito de personalidade ou algo íntimo, como também é revelador de memória de experiências e vivências do quotidiano, sem esquecer que mais do que memórias, os nomes são identidades que ligam a pessoa aos seus ancestrais. Diante destas constatações, sugerimos que a escola promova investigação na área e procure validar e estudar os nomes dados no contexto tradicional africano para a valorização da cultura moçambicana.The aim of this research is to analyse Mozambican anthroponyms in the city of Tete, based on the criteria for their attribution and their social representation in the aforementioned locality. The object of study is Mozambican onomastics, with a focus on the criteria for attributing anthroponyms, in the light of the civil registration code in use in Mozambique and inspired by the vision of Cumbe (2012). In this study, we therefore sought to understand the motivations and criteria used to assign anthroponyms, as well as their social dimension in this community in the city of Tete. Using questionnaires for teachers and students and interviews with name-givers, family members, nomenclators and registry and notary officials in the city of Tete, as well as a documentary analysis of the Mozambican civil registry code, we concluded that most nomenclators and people who have already received names understand that giving a name means baptising or nicknaming someone, that this is an element that, in itself, conveys power and a message and is a right of personality or something intimate, as well as revealing the memory of everyday experiences, without forgetting that more than memories, names are identities that link people to their ancestors.
