Musicologists believe that the music inspired by Shadwell's play, namely from Purcell, Gluck and Pocok, paved the way for Don Giovanni. What has hitherto been ignored is the impact of Shadwell's play The Libertine on this opera and on the future directions that Don Juanism would take.
