Com base nos indícios que se encontram nessa obra de ficção em prosa do século xviii, propõe-se que ela consiste em uma «história fingida», conforme a concepção desse gênero de história que se esboça no diálogo i de Corte na Aldeia (1619), de Francisco Rodrigues Lobo. Não tendo a pretensão de definir tal gênero (ou espécie), este artigo apresenta considerações que visam a contribuir para uma leitura crítica do Peregrino da América adequada às letras portuguesas e luso-brasileiras da primeira metade do Setecentos.his paper discusses the genre of the first part of the Narrative Compendium of the Pilgrim of America (1728), by Nuno Marques Pereira. Based on the evidence found in this eighteenth-century prose fiction work, it is proposed that it consists of a «pretended history», according to the conception of this genre of history that is outlined in the dialogue I of Court in the Village (1619), by Francisco Rodrigues Lobo.
