Quando adotado dentro de uma Política de Língua Familiar (PLF) consistente e associado a práticas que facilitam a assimilação do input linguístico, o hábito da leitura auxilia na manutenção do português como língua de herança (PLH) e ao mesmo tempo contribui para a formação da identidade étnica e cultural do falante da LH. Além disso, observa-se entre as famílias expatriadas brasileiras um crescente interesse em transmitir a língua e a cultura aos filhos enquanto iniciativas de manutenção da LH ao redor do mundo buscam auxiliar essas famílias por meio da literatura. A presente pesquisa qualitativa pretende observar a presença da literatura na PLF entre as famílias brasileiras expatriadas e demonstrar o papel da leitura na construção do vocabulário e na manutenção do PLH entre as crianças com idade entre 7 e 12 anos, bem como observar como algumas das crenças dos pais a respeito da LH influenciam as práticas linguísticas no contexto familiar. O caráter interdisciplinar da pesquisa conduziu à combinação de metodologias de disciplinas como a linguística, a antropologia, a sociologia (Hult e Johnson, 2015; Johnson, 2013) e etnografia (King e Fogle, 2013) para a coleta e análise de dados obtidos através de testes linguísticos, entrevistas e questionários. Propõe-se, com esse estudo, contribuir para a conscientização das famílias brasileiras expatriadas sobre a importância da transmissão da língua e cultura brasileiras ao filhos e do importante papel que desempenham nesse processo. Reading is fundamental for the construction of the lexical repertoire and for the development of oral and written expression (Sim-Sim, 2018; Montag, Jones e Smith, 2015; Farrant and Zubrick, 2012). When adopted within a consistent Family Language Policy (FLP) associated with practices that enhance the assimilation of linguistic input, the habit of reading helps in maintaining Portuguese as heritage language (PHL) and at the same time contributes to the formation of ethnic and cultural identities of HL speakers. In addition, there is an increasing interest among Brazilian expatriate families in passing on their language and culture to their children while organizations that promote Portuguese as a heritage language around the world seek to help these families through literature. This qualitative research aims to observe the presence of literature in FLP among Brazilian expatriate families and to demonstrate the role of reading in the construction of vocabulary and maintenance of PHL among children aged 7 to 12 years, as well as to observe how some of the beliefs of parents about HL influence language practices in the family context. The interdisciplinary character of the research led to the combination of methodologies of disciplines such as linguistics, anthropology, sociology (Hult e Johnson, 2015; Johnson, 2013) and ethnography (King e Fogle, 2013) for the collection and analysis of data obtained through linguistic tests, interviews and questionnaires.
