Neste contexto, este estudo tem como principal objetivo avaliar e conhecer as perceções dos diferentes stakeholders, sobre o desenvolvimento turístico da região, verificando que impactos (positivos e negativos) são identificados para Ilha de São Miguel. Para além da identificação dos impactos percecionados, pretende-se a identificação, segundo o Modelo de Competitividade dos Destinos Turísticos desenvolvido por Ritchie e Crouch, dos principais motores impulsionadores/inibidores da competitividade do destino turístico de São Miguel. E por último, a caracterização do nível de envolvimento e de participação dos stakeholders locais, no processo de planeamento turístico da ilha de São Miguel. No enquadramento teórico são abordadas temáticas e subtemáticas relacionadas com o conceito de Turismo, com os Desafios ao Desenvolvimento Turístico em Espaços Insulares, Impactos Sociais, Económicos e Ambientais, Competitividade de destino turístico e Participação Pública de Stakeholders. Como metodologia, para alcance destes objetivos, optou-se por entrevista semidiretiva e análise de conteúdo (anexo II), a uma amostra de Stakeholders da ilha de São Miguel, Açores. Tourism in the Autonomous Region of the Azores (RAA) and especially in the island of São Miguel has suffered in recent years a very significant increase and with this, the inevitable rise of economic, socio-cultural and environmental impacts. In this context, the present study aims to evaluate the perceptions of the different stakeholders, regarding the present tourism development of the region throw the verification of the perceived impacts (positive and negative) for the São Miguel Island. In addition to the identification of perceived impacts, this analysis also aims to identify, according to the stakeholders' perception, the factors of Tourism Destination Competitiveness for the region based on the Model developed by Ritchie and Crouch, trying to reveal the main driving forces behind the competitiveness of the São Miguel Island tourism destination. And finally, the characterization of the level of involvement and stakeholder participation in the tourism planning process of the island of São Miguel. The literature review will be focused on themes and sub-themes related to the concept of Tourism; Island Tourism Development Challenges; Social, Economic and Environmental Impacts; Tourism Destination Competitively Drivers and Stakeholders Public Participation.
