O simbolismo, a mitologia, e as
<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract" lang="pt_PT">Many authors consider the way in which literature and history are presented to young people as
inadequate. From elementary school to college, they are presented as school material to be
apprehended and not as a source of knowledge about the world.
In the specific case of literature, it enlarges our universe by activating the imagination and creating
sensations that carry the vision of the world to a full orientation and aesthetic beauty, through
symbolism, recreation and fiction. These factors not only allow a better identification with the
space re-created from the real, but also allow a positioning of the reader in relation to the time of
the story. In the course of the narrative and in the sense of consolidating our knowledge about the
past facts to punctuate the present, the authors propose a game between the fiction and the real, to
which they submit the characters.
In this context, and as Correia (2012) affirms in his article on the use of literature as a source for
history, "literature can be used as a historical document capable of revealing the changes and
permanences of the society of an era."
This statement was the motivating focus for a reflection on one of the purposes of the narrative
genre, the representation of facts or events, and to confirm the importance of interdisciplinarity in
learning through the introduction of auxiliary methods, such as literature, to awaken knowledge
about History of Angola.
Using one of the modalities of the narrative genre, the novel, and through a specific order of
reading some works by Angolan writers such as: Pepetela, Óscar Ribas and José Eduardo
Agualusa, it was possible to trace the course of knowledge about history, customs of the Angolan
people, as well as understanding the ways that led to the constitution of Angola as a nation.
Through the dialogues between Angolan history and literature, articulating fiction with reality, it
was possible to analyze and present a work proposal as an aid to the problem presented in this
thesis: the contribution of literature to the knowledge of history.
For a detailed analysis of the problem, we have used two novels by Pepetela, Yaka and A Gloriosa
Família – o tempo dos flamengos, which trace a period of Angolan history that is at the basis of
consciousness for the awakening of nationality.
This nationalist sentiment is confirmed in the space dedicated to Angolan writer José Eduardo
Agualusa where we analyze its version about one of the figures of Angolan history as a fictional
character through the novel: A Rainha Ginga.
Knowledge about Angolan oral tradition is an important factor for understanding some behaviors
and attitudes experienced in society. The symbolism, mythology, and traditions of the Angolan
people are fundamental elements in individual and community behavior. Therefore, we consider
that the novel, Uanga, by the Angolan writer Óscar Ribas, could contribute to the acquisition of
knowledge about the traditions of Angolan society.
To frame this work it was necessary to use some introductory tools such as brief presentations on
the history of Angola and on the course of Angolan literature; a brief stance on the concept and
purpose of the novel mode within the narrative genre and a link between the history and customs
of Angola with some literary works by Pepetela and Óscar Ribas.
These tools allowed the affirmation of the theoretical positioning of the genre of literary narrative,
novel, and suggest that an interdisciplinarity between history and literature can encourage the
consolidation of the learning of history.</dim:field>
