Como objecto de estudo foi seleccionado o bairro dos Canaviais, situado na zona norte da cidade de Évora, no período balizado entre os anos de 1900 e 1950. Neste espaço de tempo, traçou-se a evolução sócio/económico/cultural da comunidade rural que o criou e fez-se o registo das memórias mais significativas do grupo, associadas às instituições criadas no bairro: a Sociedade Operária de Instrução e Recreio «Educação do Povo», a Casa do Povo e o Albergue Distrital de Mendicidade. Paralelamente, tratou-se o património edificado fazendo o levantamento do mesmo, acompanhado de um breve historial e de algumas sugestões que possam contribuir para a sua defesa e preservação The present work concerns the local history with a special focus on the people’s identity and heritage. The object of this study is “Bairro dos Canaviais” situated in the North neighbourhood of Évora between 1900 and 1950. In this period we describe the social, economical and cultural evolution of the rural community from whom it has arisen and we register the most significant memories of the group associated with the institutions born in the district: the Working Society of Education and Recreation “Educação do Povo”, the “Casa do Povo” and the Beggary Asylum of the District.
