No âmbito da literatura timorense em língua portuguesa destaca-se Luís Cardoso - o mais versátil e proeminente romancista timorense. Produtor de cinco romances singulares, Cardoso imbui a narrativa com acontecimentos e atores em estreita ligação com a História de Timor. Para além da envolvência histórica, são transversais, na sua encenação romanesca, os diálogos entre tempos, entre romances e entre vozes cuja matriz comum, e elo, é a cultura timorense. Ao transpor elementos da cultura e da vivência nativa para o espaço literário, Cardoso contribui para a construção da identidade e da memória coletiva timorense. O presente trabalho de investigação visa utilizar as pistas culturais timorenses para melhor compreender a produção estética de Cardoso. É de crer que o exercício se mostre pertinente em dois aspetos convergentes e complementares: na compreensão da literatura cardosiana e na divulgação da cultura timorense. Com o propósito supramencionado em vista, o esforço investigativo organiza-se em quatro capítulos. Após uma breve contextualização do autor e do panorama literário timorense (capítulo I), problematizar-se-á se, dada a proliferação de pistas culturais timorenses, Cardoso carece de um leitor específico (capítulo II). Posteriormente (capítulo III), serão analisados os dispositivos de representação da realidade e de que forma estes podem ser lidos em articulação com a cosmogonia nativa. Por fim, propõe-se o derradeiro jogo de sentidos: a leitura da narrativa cardosiana em articulação com a simbologia de elementos de relevo na cultura autóctone (capítulo IV). Timorese literature witnessed, in the first decade of the current millennium, the awakening of its novel genre. Concerning Timorese literature of Portuguese Language we highlight Luis Cardoso – the most versatile and prominent Timorese novelist. Author of five unique novels, Cardoso imbues the narrative with events and actors deeply connected to East Timor’s History. Furthermore the historical ambience, are transversal, within the novel’s representation, the dialogues between times, between novels and between voices which common transverse matrix and bond is the Timorese culture. By transposing both cultural elements and aspects of the homegrown living to the literary scope, Cardoso contributes to the construction of Timorese identity and collective memoir. The following framework intends to use Timorese cultural hints to better comprehend Cardoso’s aesthetical production. It is to be trusted that the exercise may show itself relevant in two converging and complementary aspects: to understand Cardosian literature and to unveil Timorese culture. Thus, aiming to the latter purpose, the investigative effort is organized in four chapters. Following a brief contextualization of both author and Timorese literary panorama (Chapter I), it will be problematized if, due to the proliferation of Timorese culture, Cardoso requires a specific reader (Chapter II). After (chapter III), we will analyze the devices of reality representation and how they might be read entwined with the native cosmogony.
