Sendo uma obra que retrata o universo português, desde os bairros da capital, os fados, as touradas, a vida em sociedade, ela reflete um modo de ser português na viragem do séc. XIX e início séc. XX. A junção e interpretação dos elementos históricos, literários científicos e artísticos tornaram este trabalho numa travessia funcional e crítica sobre uma época de mudanças estruturais muito ricas ao nível dos signos e da simbólica de identidade nacional, secular na cultura e língua portuguesas aos níveis da história, da teoria literária, da filosofia da cultura e da semiologia. Assim, com o intuito de reconhecer a obra de Júlio Dantes e atribuir à Severa o importante papel que desempenhou na altura, quer como personagem real, quer como personagem literária, quer como fadista, esta dissertação pretende ser também um modesto contributo à interpretação do Fado e da sua alma própria, entendendo-o como género musical de resto já reconhecido como Património Imaterial da Humanidade pela UNESCO. This study, through a literary, cultural and historical analysis conducts a hermeneutic approach to the work “A Severa”, from the writer Júlio Dantas. Being a work that portrays the Portuguese universe, from the neighborhoods of the capital, Fados, bullfighting, the social life of a small but great people, the solidarity and friendship that unites them, reflects a way of being Portuguese at the turn of the nineteenth century and early twentieth century. The junction and interpretation of historical, literary, scientific and artistic elements, made this work a functional crossing and critical about a time of very rich structural changes at the level of signs and symbolic of national identity, secular culture and the levels of Portuguese history, literary theory, philosophy of culture and semiotics stock.
