Uma das funções primordiais da Biblioteca Escolar consiste na promoção do
livro e da leitura. A leitura e, sobretudo, a sua compreensão determinam o sucesso
individual, não só do aluno, como do cidadão em geral. A leitura é uma competência
que condiciona os níveis de literacia da população. Problematizar leitura e literacia,
processos de aquisição e fatores condicionantes desta aquisição, como o meio onde se
insere o leitor e a BE, são questões essenciais neste estudo.
A Biblioteca da Escola onde se desenvolveu o presente estudo esteve encerrada
um ano e meio para obras de construção de um novo espaço. Decorridos dois anos de
funcionamento, importava conhecer a sensibilidade dos leitores da biblioteca escolar em
relação às atividades até agora desenvolvidas e as suas expectativas em relação às
atividades de promoção do livro e da leitura a desenvolver no futuro. Tendo como ponto
de partida as orientações europeias e da Rede de Bibliotecas Escolares e do Plano
Nacional de Leitura, procurou-se analisar os hábitos de leitura dos utilizadores e o seu
posicionamento em relação às propostas de atividades de promoção do livro e da leitura,
que serão ainda fundamentadas na reflexão sobre os processos de aquisição e de
desenvolvimento da referida competência.
The primary function of a school library is to promote reading and books. The personal
success of a person or of an ordinary citizen is decided by his ability to read and even
more by the fact that he understands what he is reading. The faculty of reading is a
competence that will determine the levels of literacy of a population. The problematic
caused by the reading ability and by the literacy of a population as well as the means of
acquiring them, the triggers that will allow these acquisitions and the environment
needed by the school library and by those who attend them are the essential elements of
this study. The school library inside the school where study was developed was shut
down during a period of a year and a half due to major transformations and the
construction of a new space for the library. This new library has been reopened two
years ago and it is necessary to evaluate the impact over the readers of our school
library especially concerning the activities that have been developed until now as well
as those concerning the promotion of books and reading in the future. Taking into
consideration the European guides as well as those of the national plan on reading and
those of the RBE, we shall propose activities that will promote reading and books.
These activities will be based thinking of the acquisition process and the development
of the competence in question.
