Tomé e Príncipe e refletir sobre a coexistência destas Línguas e a Língua segunda no sistema educativo santomense e o papel da leitura e da educação artística nesse contexto. Parte-se assim de uma descrição da situação linguística do país, estabelecendo-se os seus principais contornos em termos das línguas faladas e da língua de escolarização, neste caso, o português europeu. Aborda-se em seguida o papel da educação artística no contexto da promoção da língua materna e da sua relação com a língua de escolarização, no sentido de potenciar o sucesso educativo das crianças, ao favorecer a construção da identidade santomense e ao aumentar a auto-estima dos alunos. A segunda parte deste trabalho incide sobre um estudo empírico, cruzando elementos variados, no sentido de identificar a posição dos professores de S. Tomé e Príncipe em relação ao papel e lugar das línguas maternas no seu contexto educativo e aos contributos da educação artística para a promoção dessas línguas. This dissertation has the purpose to examine the confluence of mother tongues spoken in S. Tomé and Príncipe and reflect on the coexistence of these languages and second language education system in São Tomé and the role of reading and arts education in this context. It starts with a description of the linguistic situation of the country, establishing its main contours in terms of spoken languages and the language of schooling, in this case, European Portuguese. Then it approaches the role of arts in education in the context of the promotion of mother tongues and its relation to the language of schooling in order to enhance the educational success of children by supporting the construction of their identity as São Tomé and Príncipe citizens and also to increase self-esteem of students. The second part of this dissertation focuses on an empirical study crossing different elements in order to identify the position of teachers of S.
