Inicia-se com uma contextualização do aparecimento da crítica literária feminista, nos anos setenta, seguida por uma breve definição e perspetiva histórica da ficção científica, o género literário em que o conto se insere. Num terceiro momento, apresenta-se um pequeno apontamento sobre a vida e a obra da autora, Alice Sheldon, que publicou sob o pseudónimo masculino James Tiptree, Jr. A dissertação termina com a leitura do conto, que permite abordar temas importantes para a crítica literária e para o feminismo, como sejam os do género e da identidade, e os da (in)visibilidade das mulheres escritoras e das mulheres em geral. Procurámos situar a escrita de James Tiptree, Jr. no seu tempo (anos sessenta e setenta do século XX) e no género literário da ficção científica, mas também procurámos mostrar a sua originalidade e a forma como algumas das suas posições antecipam ideias posteriormente avançadas por outras pensadoras, em relação ao espaço ocupado pelas mulheres. A utilização do pseudónimo masculino permite problematizar a questão da (eventual) diferença na escrita dos homens e das mulheres, e também questionar a nossa posição de leitores e a forma como os nossos preconceitos influenciam as nossas leituras. This dissertation aims to present a writer, untranslated and unpublished in Portugal, Alice Sheldon/James Tiptree, Jr., through the reading of one of her short stories, “The Women Men Don’t See”, from a feminist reading position. It begins with a contextualization of the emergence of feminist literary criticism, in the seventies, followed by a short definition and historical perspective of the science fiction genre, to which the story belongs. Next comes a brief note on the life and work of the author, Alice Sheldon, who published under the male pseudonym James Tiptree, Jr. This dissertation ends with the reading of the story, that addresses important issues to literary criticism and to feminism, such as gender and identity, and the (in)visibility of women writers and women in general. We tried to position James Tiptree Jr.’s writing within her time (the sixties and seventies of the twentieth century) and within the science fiction genre, but we aimed to show her originality and the way some of her views anticipated the ideas of latter thinkers, concerning the space occupied by women.
