À parte de tudo aquilo que se tem escrito sobre este jovem inglês e a sua amada, Ana de Arfet, cada vez que nos debruçamos sobre este assunto apercebemo-nos de que muito ainda pode ser feito e muito ainda nos esconde a obscuridade dos documentos que desconhecemos. Chamando até nós os textos que veiculam a lenda de Machim, mostrando as particularidades de cada um, esclarecemos algumas questões relacionadas com este assunto, nomeadamente as diferentes abordagens que desta lenda têm sido feitas, donde resultam diferentes versões. Em cada um dos escritos encontramos elementos, aqui interpretados como topoi literários, que são apresentados quase sempre pela mesma ordem e que conferem uma consistência suficiente para podermos dizer que a lenda de Machim se baseia num episódio com conteúdo e com expressão independentes. De entre eles temos, por exemplo, a fuga de barco, a navegação à deriva, a tempestade, a beleza natural da Ilha da Madeira, a morte de Ana de Arfet e de Machim, entre outros. Reportando os géneros distintos, as diferentes versões, regra geral, tendem a dar um maior relevo à situação de desterro do jovem casal na Ilha da Madeira, e consequente morte por amor, do que propriamente ao elemento descoberta, com a posse da terra a ser legada para segundo plano. Ainda assim, é indiscutível a ligação desta lenda à formação da identidade insular madeirense, com o consequente enriquecimento do seu imaginário, ganhando Machim traços de um herói fundador e o seu episódio os contornos de uma narrativa fundacional. Machim’s trip and the subsequent discovery of Madeira Island is a legendary episode that can not be excluded from the history of this island and should be considered in the context of the Portuguese Discoveries. Much has been written about this Englishman and his much-loved Ana de Arfet. But, each time one studies this subject, one realises that much more can be said about it, namely if documents unknown to us are to be considered. When we read the texts that convey Machim’s legend, we are struck by their singularity. Therefore we have tried to elucidate some questions related to this subject, namely in the field of the different interpretations of the legend and its different versions. Each text contain elements – literary topoi – presented almost in the same order that provide enough consistency to say that this legend is an independent episode, both in content and expression. These topoi are mainly the following: the boat trip as an evasion, some days of drift navigation, the storm, the natural beauty of the Madeira Island; Ana de Arfet and Machim’s death. The story has been used as subject by texts of different literary genres and with diverse finalities. Most texts normally give more importance to the young couple’s exile trip to Madeira Island and to the subsequent death of the lovers, than to the discovery and possession of the land. Even so, it is beyond question the connection of this legend to the formation of the identity of Madeira Island’s people and of their imaginary.
