[S.l.]: [s.n.], 2023. 94 p. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.2/13857 urn:tid:203321189 203321189 Na tentativa de encontrar um património comum e uma memória coletiva a todos os seus Estados-Membros, uma identidade para legitimar o crescente processo de integração europeu, a União Europeia encontrou no Holocausto um evento histórico que amplamente seria reconhecido e assimilado no seio desta, como algo a não repetir e a evitar no futuro. O uso desta memória coletiva veio assim quebrar com os postulados tradicionais de se estabelecer uma identidade nacional ou regional baseada no recordar de narrativas positivas do passado, atribuindo à união a capacidade de definir a sua razão de ser na atualidade como uma união caracterizada pela paz, inclusão e diversidade de povos e culturas, onde a dignidade e respeito pelos direitos humanos são os valores pelas quais as diversas sociedades europeias se regem. No entanto, e ainda que aceite oficialmente por todos os Estados-Membros, o princípio do século XXI foi marcado pelo questionamento do estatuto enaltecido desta memória e o conflito com a necessidade dos seus membros verem reconhecidas as suas narrativas e memórias nacionais e regionais. Também as medidas a adotar na proteção e luta contra a negação do Holocausto geraram discussões internas, onde as diversas tradições legislativas se manifestaram perante a tentativa da União Europeia impor supostas limitações à liberdade de expressão. Para além disso, e apesar de todo o esforço efetuado, a eficácia da mesma é questionável, sendo possível de identificar uma União Europeia afetada pelo surgimento e subida ao poder de vários partidos e movimentos de extrema-direita, bem como pela crescente presença de sentimentos e crimes de origem antissemitas, crimes raciais e de ódio. In an attempt to find a common heritage and a collective memory for all its Member States, an identity to legitimize the growing process of European, the European Union found in the Holocaust a historical event that would be widely acknowledged and assimilated internally as something not to be repeated, an occurrence to be avoided in the future. Thus, the use of this collective memory broke with the traditional postulates of establishing a national or regional identity based on remembering positive narratives from the past, offering the union the ability to define itself as an entity identified by peace, for the inclusion and diversity of its population and cultures, where dignity and respect for human rights are the values by which the various European societies are governed. However, and even though officially accepted by all Member States, the beginning of the 21st century was marked by the questioning of the elevated status of this memory and the conflict with the need to also recognize national and regional memories and narratives. The measures to be adopted in the protection and fight against Holocaust denial also generated discussions between the Member States, where the different legislative traditions react against European Union's attempt to implement supposed limitations to the freedom of speech.
